What is our daily average consumption of water?

It is rather difficult to calculate our precise daily requirements, as consumption varies and is dependent upon our life style choices.

On average, it has been calculated that we use 150 litres per person per day.

  • A daily bath uses approximately 80 litres of water
  • A 5-minute shower uses approximately 45 litres of water
  • A full load washing machine uses between 50 to 100 litres of water
  • A dishwasher uses between 12 to 20 litres of water
  • A toilet flush uses between 5 to 9 litres per flush

The next important question is; how is water used in the home?

  • Toilet flushing - 30%
  • Personal washing, baths and taps - 21%
  • Personal washing, showers - 12%
  • Clothes washing - 13%
  • Washing up - 8%
  • Outdoor use - 7%
  • Other - 5%
  • Drinking - 4%

Based upon the above figures it is simple to see how modern living impacts on our consumption of this precious commodity.
