What are you trying to water?

Beds and borders - Drip or Sprinklers?

Why Drip?

Drip -

For general purposes we recommend the Leaky Pipe, easy to install, very flexible and versatile. Needs to be buried or covered in mulch.

If you want to leave it on the surface - Surface Drip Line. This pipe is less flexible than the Leaky Pipe and is best in straight lines. It is the same size as the Leaky Pipe but if covering a large area it uses 3 times as much water as the Leaky Pipe, which means that if you have a limited water supply you will have to split the area into several zones. The running times should be a 1/3rd of that for the Leaky Pipe

For beds that are on a slope or where the difference in height between the beds is greater than 15ft, use Sloping Drip Line. This is pressure compensated so at each dripper, spaced every 33cm, there is a special device that ensures the water is evenly distributed at each dripper giving you an even output.

If using water from a rain water harvesting system, river or well, we recommend the sloping drip line; at the start of each watering sequence the pipe "flushes" to remove particles from the dripper.

What if plants you wish to water are a long distance apart?  Then your best choice would be Orchard Watering System a dripper is placed either side of the tree on 16 tube or hose, so only the tree root are watered.

For a temporary solution that will last one to two years Drip Tape

Sprinklers

Pop Ups - are not suitable as, on the whole, cause too much damage. If installing a lawn watering system as a by product the beds could be incorporated especially if the shrubs are low, look at using the rotator pop ups on 12" riser.

Moveable Sprinklers - We have some excellent full or part circle sprinklers that can be raised so the jet forms a gentle rain rather than a fierce jet.

Permanent sprinklers - For a permanent or for one season installed watering system use small sprinklers on spikes.

Mini Sprinklers -  Garden Systems own brand, exactly the same as we sell to commercial growers.

Gardena Micro Drip System - A very popular make and well known for its toughness and build quality. Europes largest supplier and a top brand, commonly available in case you need spares in a hurry.

For narrow beds - Micro Sprinklers

For those who have already invested in a Hozelock system we have the parts but at a far more competitive price, either the same component or a very similar product.

 Vegetables -  Drip or Sprinklers

Drip - For general purposes we recommend the Leaky Pipe easy to install, very flexible and versatile. Needs to be buried or covered in mulch.

If you want to leave on the surface, Surface Drip Line. This pipe is less flexible than the Leaky Pipe so best used in straight lines. Is widely used in vegetables as you may prefer to leave the pipe on the surface for easier cultivation.

If using water from a rain water harvesting system, river or well we would recommend the Sloping Drip Line as this is pressure compensated and at the start of each watering sequence, the pipe "flushes" to remove particles from the dripper.

If using water from a water butt use our special Water Butt Pipe that is designed to work at very low pressures.

We have used the adjustable output drippers very successfully on thirsty plants such as courgettes that are planted at a wide spacing.

If using a bed system people find a 16 tap to control each bed a useful addition.

Pop ups are not suitable as they cause too much damage when placed at ground level.

Moveable Sprinklers. We have some excellent part circle sprinklers that can be raised so the jet forms a gentle rain rather than a fierce jet. We have connected these to a post to give a permanent system.

Mini Sprinklers - For a sprinkler system as a permanent installed watering system use small sprinklers on spikes connected with 16 tube and then thinner tube to the sprinklers.

Mini Sprinklers - Gardena Micro Drip System & Claber MiniSprinklers. These sprinkler systems can be combined with adjustable output drippers.

  Lawns

For an underground system either the Leaky Pipe or the Sloping Drip Line can be used underground. It works very well but you need close spacing and can be expensive to install, however correctly operated it grows beautiful healthy grass with no stripes.

Moveable Sprinklers - We stock a large range.

Pop-Ups are the most popular method and once installed are discrete and provide many years of use. Pop-ups tend to bring out the child in all of us and years later, even to the cynical old irrigation engineers, there is a sense of fun and amazement as they come through the lawn.

Our systems are designed to take the mystery out of installing a pop up irrigation system and we offer help with the planning, please do not hesitate to contact us if you need further help.

  Hanging Baskets and Containers

Drip is best!

Lots of containers of roughly the same size Hanging Garden Water Supplies.

To come from a water butt - Hanging Garden Water Supplies.

Pots of many different sizes and volume? Use Adjustable Output System

Very discrete system using 5mm pipe only Micro Hanging Garden.

For a system that does not rely on a timer and only takes the water it requires look at the Autopot and Tropf Blumat systems.

For those of you who like an established brand

Very widely spaced pots call us for advice on pressure compensating and locking off drippers. 01473 400 101.

 Trees - Drip is best

For areas that have lots of trees that are not too large (2-3 years old) an Orchard Watering System is best with a pressure compensated dripper placed either side of the tree and connected with either 16 or 20 tube.

For more mature trees with a larger canopy, greater water requirements and wider spacing we suggest the adjustable output drippers, water is directed into a drainage pipe that goes to the base of the tree in a loop.

For mature large trees either put an adjustable output dripper either side or a root zone watering system. On larger trees especially in built up areas, the watering system has an important secondary function of making sure the root system has adequate air.
